The part of the tooth that’s above the gum and is visible is called a crown. When the enamel covering the crown becomes dark or dull, they can be replaced with a new crown. Replacement crowns are placed over broken or decayed teeth and intended to cap them. Thus, the crown now becomes the new tooth. Crowns are also placed after a root canal to protect the decayed tooth from further damage. Crowns are made of porcelain or metal. Porcelain is the preferred choice because they look natural and are very strong. Ideally crowns are durable and last for more than a decade. For your crown to last this long, it’s important that they’re made from the best material available.
