Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic dentistry is generally used to refer to any dental work that improves the appearance (though not necessarily the function) of a person’s teeth, gums, and/or bite. It primarily focuses on improving dental aesthetics in color, position, shape, size, alignment, and overall smile appearance. Many dentists refer to themselves as “cosmetic dentists” regardless of their specific education, specialty, training, and experience in this field. This has been considered unethical with a predominant objective of marketing to patients. The American Dental Association does not recognize cosmetic dentistry as a formal specialty area of dentistry. However, there are still dentists that promote themselves as cosmetic dentists.

Tooth extraction is a fairly common procedure. Among children, they’re extracted to allow the permanent teeth to erupt. And among adults, they’re done to remove decaying teeth. Wisdom tooth extraction is also common. Your teeth are encased inside tooth sockets in the jaw bone and are held together with the help of ligaments. Extraction involves loosening these sockets so that the tooth can be separated from the ligaments holding them. This procedure is done quickly and under anesthesia. The dentist may recommend filling the gap left by the extracted tooth to prevent complications.

Dental implants help to replace missing or broken teeth without affecting the adjacent teeth. They’re also ideal when dentures do not fit properly or are difficult to adjust. But unlike other, this is a complex procedure and often done over a period of several months. A dental implant refers to an artificial tooth root that’s placed on the jaw and intended to replace the natural tooth.

Bridge

The gap left by a missing tooth is bridged with an artificial tooth called ‘bridge’. A typical dental bridge has two crowns (to be placed on the adjacent teeth) and the artificial tooth in between. The false teeth may either be made using gold, alloys, porcelain, or a combination of all of these. Bridges can be made to appear like your natural teeth. They are as strong as natural teeth and last for a very long time. But the patient will have to maintain good oral hygiene and keep the adjacent teeth healthy and strong. This includes brushing the teeth twice a day, regular flossing, and visiting a hygienist regularly for dental check-ups.

Crown

The part of the tooth that’s above the gum and is visible is called a crown. When the enamel covering the crown becomes dark or dull, they can be replaced with a new crown. Replacement crowns are placed over broken or decayed teeth and intended to cap them. Thus, the crown now becomes the new tooth. Crowns are also placed after a root canal to protect the decayed tooth from further damage. Crowns are made of porcelain or metal. Porcelain is the preferred choice because they look natural and are very strong. Ideally crowns are durable and last for more than a decade. For your crown to last this long, it’s important that they’re made from the best material available.

Periodontitis and other gum diseases can be prevented through proper oral hygiene. And if you’ve recently received treatment for the problem, effective lifestyle measures can prevent the problem from recurring. Common maintenance procedures include scaling and root planting, removing plaque and tartar, tooth polishing, etc. Ideally, periodontal care visits are scheduled once every six months, although, it is up to the dentist to determine the frequency of your visits.

Dentures are removable artificial teeth and intended to replace missing teeth. Unlike the days before, dentures can be made to look exactly like your natural teeth. Also, you no longer have to replace the entire set of teeth- you can replace only those in need of replacement. Full dentures are suggested only in extreme cases where almost all of the patient’s teeth are damaged. Partial dentures are connected to the teeth using a metal frame.
